The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame celebrates and honors the greatest musicians and artists in rock and roll music. The Hall has revealed its nominees for 2023. To be eligible for nomination, an artist or band must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. The Hall’s voting body, consisting of musicians, historians, and music industry members, with a fan vote also being counted as one vote. Several legends are up for nomination including Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden. The White Stripes, are also up for nomination. New wave icons Joy Division and New Order are eligible, but being considered as a joint act. The Hall is striving for greater inclusivity with its new mission statement which defines rock and roll as “a spirit that is inclusive and ever-changing,” and not limited to any specific genre.
Among the first-time nominees are Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes, and Warren Zevon.
John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said, “These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.” Like i stated before the results of a fan vote will also be counted as one vote.
