Guitarist Slash reposted from @artneversleeps a post about a Musician who was woken up midway through brain surgery year 2020, to play the violin.
In London, the British patient demonstrated her musical prowess during brain surgery to preserve her lifelong passion for playing the violin.
Dagmar Turner, a former management consultant from the Isle of Wight, played the violin while surgeons removed a tumor from the right frontal lobe of her brain. This area controls the fine movement of her left hand, which is essential for playing the instrument.
To ensure that her musical abilities remained intact, Professor Keyoumars Ashkan, a consultant neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospital, devised a strategy. They mapped her brain, opened her skull, and had her play as they removed the tumor.
During the procedure, Turner played music by Gustav Mahler, George Gershwin’s jazz classic “Summertime,” and pieces by Spanish songwriter and singer Julio Iglesias.
The Doctor said: “This was the first time I’ve had a patient play an instrument, we managed to remove over 90 percent of the tumour, including all the areas suspicious of aggressive activity, while retaining full function in her left hand.”
The musician was very thankful: “The violin is my passion; I’ve been playing since I was 10 years old, the thought of losing my ability to play was heartbreaking.”
